THE DANCING CHURCH AROUND THE WORLD by Thomas A. Kane As a ritual maker and dancer, I aim to portray the power, the majesty and the prayerfulness of dance. Over the years, I have explored the intersection of liturgy, dance and culture, traveling to different parts of the world to experience, study and record worship experiences in Africa, Oceania, Spain and parts of the United States. With reports from missionaries about wonderful dancing and thrilling integration into liturgy, I brought that experience back on videotape. After years traveling around the African continent, the deep blue waters of the Pacific, parts of Europe and the southwest of the United States, I had incredibly moving experiences about life, family, faith and dancing. Not only was the church dancing, but the Christian faith was so embodied and connected to everyday life. No longer a tourist, my traveling became a pilgrimage and I learned to pray and move in unexpected ways. The documentaries present actual worship, aiming to acquaint Western audiences with the liturgical developments within the wider Church and to present full, embodied worship, examining various Church contexts: village worship, Cathedral/city worship, worship in the bush and the worship of a cloistered community. Many of the locations were selected because of the creative use of cultural elements in the worship, especially dance. I am delighted that the original material is now available in digital format with improved sound and sharper images. |
